| Notes: | Obituary of John Gallagher (from Skwarchuk Funeral Home website)
John was born in 1937, in Westminster, London, to Martin Gallagher of Belfast, Northern Island, and Anne
Gallagher of Cork, Ireland. John was the first of four sons, brother to Joseph, Patrick, and Michael Gallagher.
John grew up in Northwest London, Kentish Town until 1955, when he and his family moved to Canada.
From an early age, John set his sights on a career in Finance, and began his career working for the Toronto
Dominion Bank in 1955. John was a well-known investment advisor in the Hamilton region where he led a
retirement financial practice that specialized in supporting steelworkers at Dofasco. His career spanned more
than 50 years, with John retiring in 2013.
An avid runner, John was a member of the Highgate Harriers in London, and a member of the East York
Track Club. He also had the honour to carry and run with the Olympic torch for Canada in 1988.
John will be remembered by his family and friends as a skiing enthusiast. From Kitzbuhel, to the Dolomites,
to the Green Mountains of Vermont, John enjoyed some of his happiest times on the ski hill. In John’s own
words, he described that it had been a life well-lived and well-travelled.
John is survived by his wife Alice Edwards, daughter Fiona, and grandchildren, Sophie and Nicholas. |
